Creditor Hearings in the Northern Part of Southwest Michigan

If you file for bankruptcy in Kent, Ottawa, Barry, Ionia, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo or Oceana County, your Section 341 Meeting (the Meeting of the Creditors) will be held in Grand Rapids.

Unlike many districts, Grand Rapids 341 Meetings are not held at the Federal Courthouse. Instead, they are held at the Ledyard Building located at 125 Ottawa NW, which is on the corner of Ottawa and Pearl. To look at the building, you would think you were at the wrong place for a bankruptcy meeting. The first floor of the building is primarily retail, including a jewelry store, printer, barber, etc. There is also a restaurant located in the center of the building. The rest of the building is office space.

The 341 Meeting room is located on the second floor. If you take the elevator, you will want to go to "2R". Basically the only things located at 2R are the Office of the US Trustee, the 341 meeting rooms, and restrooms.

As you walk in to the 341 meeting rooms, there is a small hallway with a bulletin board. Most often, the trustee(s) having meetings that day will post a schedule of all of their meetings. It is helpful to look at that to know what order you will be going in and how long you will likely have to wait. There will usually be anywhere from 6 to 9 meetings scheduled for a one hour time block for one trustee. Most of the trustees will take the cases in the order scheduled, although there is at least one Chapter 7 trustee who will take the cases in the order that the trustee questionnaires are submitted.

Each trustee provides his/her own questionnaire to be completed prior to your meeting. Some of the trustees place the questionnaires on the bulletin board next to the schedule. However, most leave them on a chair either in the waiting room or in the meeting room. Sometimes two trustees will hold meetings at the same time. If that happens, make sure that you fill out the questionnaire for the right trustee.

Through the hallway, there is a waiting room and off the waiting room there are two meeting rooms. The meeting rooms consist of a conference table at the front of the room with a chair on one side for the trustee and chairs on the other side for the debtor(s) and attorney. Unlike some locations, the meeting rooms in Grand Rapids also contain several rows of chairs where other people waiting for their meetings can sit. It sometimes stresses people when they find out that other people can listen in on their meeting. But, everyone up there is in the same position and the questions asked are not that invasive, so it really is not a big deal. In fact, it is sometimes helpful because it means that you can also listen to other meetings and get a very good idea how yours will go.

There is plenty of parking in downtown Grand Rapids, but is not always that convenient. There are parking meters in front of the Ledyard Building. If you can get one, that is the cheapest alternative. However, keep in mind that your meeting will probably be later (sometimes much later) than the scheduled time. So, make sure you put plenty of time on the meter. Otherwise, there are several parking lots and parking garages in the area. In fact, there is a lot right behind the Ledyard building on Pearl and another lot diagonally across from the Ledyard building on the northeast corner of Ottawa and Pearl. Currently, these lots cost $2 per half hour. Also, there is no attendant on duty, so you will need cash or a debit card to pay when you leave.

Finally, give yourself not only plenty of time to get downtown, but also to find parking. Normally, finding parking is not a problem, but if you happen to have your meeting when there is a big event going on in Grand Rapids, it can be an issue. For instance, when Art Prize was going on, all of the lots and garages close to the Ledyard Building were full. There are more garages further away, but it will obviously take more time to drive around and find them and then walk to your meeting.
